The Wellbeing of Christian School Leaders: A National Conversation That Needs to Begin

The Wellbeing of Christian School Leaders: A National Conversation That Needs to Begin

Christian school leaders carry extraordinary responsibility.

Every day they make decisions that shape the lives of students, staff, and families. They lead complex organisations, navigate difficult situations, and carry the emotional weight of their communities. Alongside the operational demands of running a school, leaders in Christian education also carry a spiritual and pastoral responsibility that is rarely acknowledged outside the role.

They are expected to be wise decision-makers, compassionate listeners, steady leaders, faithful Christians, and visible representatives of their school community — often all at once.

Yet despite the significance of this work, the wellbeing of Christian school leaders has rarely been explored in depth.

Across Australia there has been growing concern about the pressures faced by school principals and senior leaders. National research has highlighted increasing workloads, rising expectations from communities, and the emotional complexity of modern school leadership.

However, no national survey has yet focused specifically on the wellbeing of Christian school leaders.

Christian schooling carries its own distinctive dynamics. Leaders are not only responsible for educational outcomes, but also for nurturing the spiritual life of their communities. They often navigate expectations from churches, boards, families, and staff — all while attempting to remain spiritually grounded themselves.

Through conversations with many leaders over the years, one theme emerges repeatedly:

Many Christian school leaders are carrying far more than most people realise.

This survey seeks to begin listening to those experiences.

Introducing the Australian Christian School Leadership Wellbeing Survey

The Australian Christian School Leadership Wellbeing Survey aims to better understand the realities of leadership within Christian schooling.

The survey explores areas such as:

  • leadership workload and sustainability
  • emotional pressures within leadership
  • experiences of isolation or support
  • the impact of leadership on spiritual wellbeing
  • the long-term sustainability of Christian school leadership

The goal is not simply to gather statistics.

The goal is to listen to the voices of leaders so that Christian education communities can better understand how to support those entrusted with this work.

Insights from the survey will contribute to the Australian Christian School Leadership Wellbeing Report, which will be shared with Christian education networks, schools, and leaders across Australia.

My own journey into this work began through over 20 years of leadership within Christian schooling. During that time I saw firsthand the complexity of the principal’s role and the immense responsibility leaders carry. Alongside the strategic and operational demands of leadership, I observed the emotional and spiritual weight that many leaders quietly hold.

Since that time, I created Permission to Pause, so that I can continue speaking with leaders across different Christian education networks and systems. In the conversations I have had so far, I repeatedly hear the same underlying experience:

Many leaders feel they must carry significant pressures without a safe space to speak openly about them.

These conversations raised an important question: What is the true wellbeing reality of Christian school leadership in Australia?

This survey is an attempt to begin answering that question.

The survey is open to leaders serving within Christian schools across Australia, including:

  • Principals and Heads of School
  • Deputy Principals
  • Heads of Campus
  • Directors of Teaching and Learning
  • Senior leadership team members

Leaders from all Christian education systems and networks are welcome to participate.

Whether your school belongs to a national system, a denominational network, or operates independently, your perspective matters. Leadership experiences are often hidden.

Many of the pressures that leaders carry are not visible to those outside the role. This survey provides an opportunity for leaders to share their experiences anonymously so that a clearer picture can emerge of what Christian school leadership truly involves.

By contributing to this survey, you are helping to build a deeper understanding of how Christian school leaders can be supported to lead faithfully, sustainably, and with renewed strength.
